PUTOR is a World Bank funded African Centre of Excellence for Public Health and Toxicological Research. As a World Bank funded initiative, it is a platform for providing inter-disciplinary academic stream of postgraduate programmes and rapidly bridge the current paucity of adequately trained personnel with terminal degrees in public health, toxicology, nutrition and midwifery/child health nursing in sub-Saharan Africa.

The creation of the Africa Centre of Excellence (ACE) for Mycotoxin and food safety will create learning opportunities and research results to address Africa’s shortage of expertise and applicable solutions to endure a safe, controlled and sufficient food supply that will support economic growth and public health.
The education objective of ACEMFS is to create an interdisciplinary experiential model that will prepare a cadre of future leaders focused on the rapidly emerging need for innovations at the nexus of food security, food safety, agricultural productivity and economics from local to global scales.

The ACEMFS will leverage the research infrastructure available in the National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CGEB) and its strategic plan to train a skilled and innovative workforce that would transform Africa’s natural resources into goods and services, driven by entrepreneurship and Information and Communication Technology (ICT), to positively affect the economy and thus the quality of life of her people.

The research objectives of ACEMFS are:
1. To foster impactive interdisciplinary research
2. To implement solutions that improve the quality of life of Africans through fit-for-purpose interventions fostering economic growth and access to sufficient safe food for all.

These objectives addresses the five sustainable development goals of poverty reduction, zero hunger, good health and well-being quality education and gender equality by 2030

 

African Centre Of Excellence for Drug Research, Herbal Medicine Development and Regulatory Science (ACEDHARS)

The African Center of Excellence for Drug Research, Herbal Medicines Development and Regulatory Science (ACEDHARS) was established to build up manpower on quality assurance, standardization of dosages, reproducibility of herbal preparations, drug development, drug repurposing and safety monitoring of drugs in West and Central African region.  The researches in the Center are focused on the development and evaluation of herbal formulations into standard products for management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).  The Center is poised to produce a compendium of herbal formulations for the treatment of NCDs in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Center programs are focused not only on herbal medicines but also on drug research, assessments and regulations based on expertise of members drawn from the Departments of Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy and Pharmacology.  The Center will run M.Sc. programs in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy and Pharmacology as well as Ph.D. Pharmacology in 2019/2020 session and thereafter commence its interdisciplinary M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Herbal Medicine, Drug Development, Biomedical Toxicology, Regulatory Science and Pharmacovigilance from 2020/2021 session.  The ACEDHARS curricula are developed to produce skilled manpower in the utilization of spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques for drug development, pharmacokinetics and drug quality assurance systems.  Furthermore, capacity will be developed in toxicity testing and safety monitoring of medicines and herbal products.  Graduates of the Center will fill the existing skill gaps in toxicology, quality control and pharmacovigilance units of regulatory agencies, drug research institutes, pharmaceutical industries, herbal product industries, healthcare facilities and traditional medicine centers in the region.
